Cathode Bias is a small workshop. We release our Cafe Sound Speakers as they become available. We are currently focused on increasing our inventory of La Modesta speakers and sound systems, but will consider requests for custom systems based on our inventory of new and vintage horns and drivers.

Altec A5 Restromod

This system is based on vintage Altec A5 horn loaded bass cabinets. We fully restored these cabinets with birch veneer and professional finishing. We added high quality vintage components including:

  • Altec 416 woofers
  • Altec 288c 24ohm horn drivers
  • Modern Baltic Birch 805 multi-cell horns
  • Fostex super tweeters
  • 3-way custom crossover based on the Jean Hiraga schematic

This has the classic Altec magic and matches well with Triode and Pentode tube amplifiers. These were designed to act as a centerpiece in a modern commercial listening room, but would also work in larger home listening room. If you ever thought about getting into the Altec world, this is a top shelf option

The Pink is our large scale dual woofer horn system. The colorway was devised by our co-founder Eylin Baus. Her vision is to escape the sea of dull sound system colors and bring a feminine touch to a traditionally masculine world.

This is our La Modesta production system. Hand made in from Baltic Birch and MDF in Reno & Lake Tahoe, NV. Based on a vintage JBL cabinets re-tuned to 50hz. New woofer and crossover components combined with vintage Altec 806a drivers and Altec 811b horns. These are currently made to order and the first systems are rolling out now.
